Black Mirror is an anthology series created by Charlie Brooker. It is like a darker, more modern version of another hugely popular anthology series, The Twilight Zone. Effectively, each episode (there are 7 in total) is a standalone parable about the modern human condition. The series is set in a not-too-distant future where technology has engulfed the moral and social landscape. Fascinatingly, the technological advancements portrayed in each episode are futuristic, but at the same time seem very plausible. The series would force you to think about how dependent we have become on technology, and if left unchecked, this over-reliance can have horrifying repercussions. Although the backdrop of each episode is rooted in our addiction towards technology, at its core, it is still deeply human -- that's what makes it so compelling.

It is, in my opinion, the single most brilliantly written show I have ever seen, and overall, one of my absolute favourite shows. Here is why.
It’s a unique glance at technology
Many films and shows have done “hey technology might be dangerous”, but almost always in a heavy-handed, absurd fashion. In your average Transcendance, you can see the seams of Hollywood screenwriters who treat tech and AI as supernatural fantasies but have little grasp of how they work.
Most of the time, the message is reduced to an obscurantist “technology is an incomprehensible force that we should absolutely leave alone for our sakes”.
Black Mirror, for one, knows exactly how we use tech, and uses this to give us those perfect, uncanny, “five minutes into the future” details, pressing exactly where it hurts. It requires no effort to imagine the social media craze featured in The National Anthem, Black Mirror’s first episode. Or the small, vicious conversations spurred by The Entire History of You’s memory grains. In Nosedive’s sick five-star rating system, we painfully recognize our insane obsession with likes and comments as a vector of social status. Hell, The Waldo Moment, though not the strongest episode in the show, pretty much predicted Trump’s rise.
Everything in Black Mirror’s twisted universe rings awfully true, and importantly, it never truly demonizes tech itself. You can see the benefits of having final conversations with your departed loved ones in Be Right Back. Having a duplicate AI version of yourself is pretty damn useful for running your home, if you’re willing to cover your ears when White Christmas’ avatars are terrified by their situation, in a profoundly disturbing meditation on artificial consciousness. The point is not that tech is evil, it’s that we are, when we’re not paying attention.
Genius creator Charlie Brooker does nothing more than hold the black mirrors of our device screens to our faces, and show us the reflections in them.

Something important to understand is that each episode is separate from the other; in other words, one can assume that each episode has it’s own universe. Some may exist in the same one, and some exist in ours, or some have their own timelines or some take place in the here and now.
Now, that being said: Black Mirror is meant to show the dangers of advanced technology, where some technology is headed, or some technology that has been ideated but is too far advanced for us right now. Some of the technology can even be thought of as over all good for the sake of humanity. Examples of technology we have now would be in “Shut Up and Dance”, “The National Anthem,” and “Playtest.” While the last one is still a little more advanced than what we have right now, we are seeing a surge in VR technology, although just with glasses or extensions to use on phones, rather than neuro-implants such as we see in this episode. “Nosedive” is probably the most fearsome because in the last ten years, we have seen such a spike in the influence social media has on our day-to-day lives and our mental health, not to mention the last year or two alone. What would happen if in the next few years, companies started offering deals or “exclusive access” based on ones social ranking on various media websites?

Think also to “Hated in the Nation.” The real world we live in right now is facing a bee crisis. What if someone were to create artificial bee-drones that could still pollinate and do what bees do to keep our ecosystem alive and healthy? How would the technology be hack-safe and how would they put the proper fail-safes in place for it to work? I think this episode in particular shows how even the best efforts and technological progress for the sake of humanity can go horribly wrong.
I’ll finish with the last example, of “Be Right Back,” which is one of my favorite and least favorite episodes. It reminds me of Star Trek and the holodecks, which are actually one of my favorite parts of the show. However, we see several characters, such as Lieutenant Barclay, become addicted to the holodeck in order to fulfill his fantasies that can not take place in real life. So we see in this Black Mirror episode, the woman can not get past her husband’s death, so she starts talking to a simulated, social media created form of him, ultimately creating a life-like being of him, only to realize he can never replace her husband because he isn’t her husband. We can often dream in ways of speaking to those who have left us, yet, what we use to keep their memory alive can never replace the people themselves.
To make my point, Black Mirror strives to show the good and the bad of technology. Most of it rocks us to the core and makes us wonder if it could ever be that type of dystopian future for us. Other times, such as the episode “San Junipero” show that some of that technology could end up being a haven instead of a curse. Black Mirror is what you make of it, whether you choose to see the dangers or the next greatest gadget.

People like Black Mirror so much because it’s an extremely well-written, well made show. Most episodes have highly original “high concepts”. It plays much like a technology-centric Twilight Zone. The technology is very well handled. It doesn’t feel like the tech is scifi just for the sake of being scifi; they go out of their way to make the tech feel believable, like real tech that will exist in a few years.
But at the end of the day, it all comes down to the stories, the writing. It just has good stories. Audiences respond to good stories.
